Our department offers something for everyone, providing learning experiences that last a lifetime. Whether your focus is on workplace, college, or university pathways, we have courses tailored to meet your needs! Our classes emphasize essential life skills such as communication, cooking, sewing, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Social Sciences & Humanities is a fun, hands-on way to learn, with engaging activities across all grades. Many of these courses also qualify under the SHSM Health & Wellness program, offered alongside our physical education department.
Unique Learning Opportunities
Students in our department gain practical and hands-on learning experiences, such as:
- Cooking in the Kitchens: Courses across all grades include hands-on cooking experiences, including Grade 9 HIF, Grade 10 HFN, Grade 11 HFC, and Grade 12 HFA.
- Sewing and Fashion: Gain experiential learning with sewing projects in courses such as Grade 9 HIF and Grade 11 HNC.
- Simulator Babies: Students in Grade 11 HPC gain practical experience caring for simulator babies.
- Pathways to Success: We offer introductory courses for Grades 9 and 10 (Exploring Family Studies - HIF, Food & Nutrition - HFN2O), workplace courses for Grades 11 and 12 (Food & Culture - HFC3E, Parenting - HPC3O, World Religions - HRF3O), college courses (Fashion & Clothing - HNC3C, Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology & Sociology - HSP3C, Nutrition & Health - HFA4C), and university pathways (Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology & Sociology - HSP3U, Nutrition & Health - HFA4U).
